Ainstein is an educational chatbot released for Facebook Messenger. Ainstein is designed to keep track of your preferences and progress and it will help you learn from some of the best eLearning platforms such as Khan Academy, Frontend Masters, Egghead, and Treehouse to name a few. Will the chatbot do what it is expected to do or is it a marketing gimmick? Let’s find out.

To activate the chatbot on Facebook Messenger, you need to click on Get Started. The chatbot will introduce itself and it will ask you to select an eLearning course. You can either choose software engineering or startups.

If you select startups, the chatbot will send you a link to the Startup School by Y Combinator. You can ask the chatbot to tell you what exactly Startup School by Y Combinator is and you can subscribe to it. The chatbot will notify you when new lessons become available online. You can also begin learning by selecting Go to Lessons. The chatbot will display five lessons and each of them will have the following options.

  • Watch it
  • Lecturer’s slide
  • Subscribe

If you select Watch it, the chatbot will redirect you to Youtube where you can watch the video. If there are slides available on the lessons, the chatbot will show it to you on Facebook Messenger. Also, you can ask the chatbot to notify you if new lessons are available with the Subscribe option.

At the start of the conversation with the chatbot, if you selected software engineering, you will be presented with the following options.

  • Javascript
  • ES6
  • React Native
  • Redux
  • ELM
  • Typescript

When you select either of the options, the chatbot will ask for your level of expertise on the subject. You can choose from beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Based on what you select, the chatbot will display what you can learn. Each topic under a particular subject will have the pace at which you want to learn. When you have selected your learning pace, the chatbot will show you videos based on it. You can either watch the videos now or at some other time. The chatbot will send regular updates at 10 a.m every day.

For example, if you select JavaScript, the chatbot will ask you to pick how good you are with the subject. If you chose beginner, the chatbot will ask you to pick between reducing data with Javascript array #reduce and Regex in Javascript. Each topic will have the following options.

  • Learn 10 minutes every day
  • Learn 15 minutes every day
  • Learn 20 minutes every day

If you select learn 20 minutes every day, the chatbot will show you two to three videos about the topic on Youtube.

However, the chatbot doesn’t understand natural language as of yet. The chatbot can only pick up keywords from your messages and respond to it accordingly. The developers are working hard to overcome this drawback and they are planning on adding additional features such as daily question and answers based on the topic you choose. They are also adding tips and tricks in the near future.

Overall, Ainstein is a brilliant educational chatbot as you can learn a lot from it at a pace that is comfortable for you. You have access to tons of educational material and you can use them for free. On top of that, the developers are continuing to improve the chatbot, in terms of features and processing. Soon, the chatbot will be able to understand natural language.

Do give Ainstein a try on Facebook Messenger!
