These days, businesses are looking for innovative ways to stay connected with their followers so that they can increase the size of their customer base. At the same time, these companies keep their followers engaged, which has a tremendous positive impact on their brand image.

Wall Street Journal, a newspaper which focuses on business, released a chatbot, making it easier for their consumers to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the financial industry. If you don’t have the time to go through the news, you can always use their chatbot on the go. How will the chatbot fare when we try out its features in real time? Find out.

Features

The developers made this chatbot available on two platforms, Amazon Echo and Facebook Messenger. Today, we will only test out the Facebook Messenger, as you can always use this platform.

When you open the link to the chatbot, you need to select “Get Started,” from the bottom of the screen. The chatbot will give you a brief introduction about its features so that you have an idea on how to use it properly. It will ask you if you want to receive financial news in the morning, every day. If you have any problems with the subscription or you want to make a change, you can enter the command “help” in the chat.

The chatbot will ask you to pick from the following options:

  • Latest news
  • Today’s market
  • Company news
  • Podcasts

If you select “Latest news,” the chatbot will display some of the headlines from its website. You can share the news with your family and friends on Facebook Messenger. If you want to go through the entire article, you can select “Read more.” Upon selecting this option, the chatbot will redirect you to the Wall Street Journal’s official website. You can also ask the chatbot to give you more news articles if you are not satisfied with its current collection.

When you select “Today’s market,” the chatbot will display how the companies are performing in the current stock market. For example, you get to know the company’s position at the end of the day. It displays a small graph, the range, and the company’s code in the stock market. You can take a closer look by knowing who are the leaders and laggards for a particular stock. An interesting point to note is that you get the current value of the stock, along with its volume.

When you choose “More Info” from one of the options, the chatbot redirects you to their official website, where you get all the data you need to make the right choices. For example, when we selected “More Info” for Dow Jones Industrial Average or DJIA, it was quite surprising to see the depth of the information. You get to see the range for the entire year, along with a detailed breakdown of its performance.

Moving on, you can get more information about the leaders and laggards. If you select “Latest news” for one of the companies, you get to know about the recent developments. At the same time, you can also look at the key metrics for every company. The latest dividend, yield, public float, shares outstanding, revenue per employee, and market cap are some of the metrics you get from the chatbot.

“Company news” allows you to know more about all the businesses. You can type “Lookup Google” or “$FB” to get news about Google or Facebook. Like the other options, the chatbot gives you its performance in the stock market, along with the latest developments. Also, you have the freedom of following the company so that you are among the first to know what is going on with the business.

The last option is “Podcasts,” which brings you up to speed on all the important stories in the financial market. You can pick from the following categories – “Morning Brief,” “Tech News Brief,” and “What’s New.” You get a small description below each category, which is extremely helpful. You can listen to the podcasts through two apps- iTunes and Spotify. Depending on what you select, the chatbot will redirect you to the appropriate website.

Verdict

To be honest, Wall Street Journal Chatbot exceeded our expectations for one that delivers the financial news. For starters, you get to know about the latest developments in all the companies, which is great. If you get stuck or you want to change your subscription, you can type “Help.” If you want to get more information about any company, the chatbot will take you to its official website. At the same time, when you follow the stock market, the chatbot displays the information through a graph. Also, the amount of information you get on the go is quite astounding.
